First Steps

FAQ:

frequently asked questions

You want to know more about your family, but do not know how to go about this.

Here are a few valuable first steps to make:

  • Interview all your family members, starting with the oldest.
  • Ask pointed questions, such as: “Grandfather, what were the names of your parents and where and when were they born?

What was your mother’s maiden name? What was their profession? Did they have siblings? What were their names? Did you know your grandparents?

  • Encourage your interviewee to name people who are shown on photographs. Should there be no mention of their names, take advantage of this conversation to note their names on the backs of these photos.
